Ways to help your child build skills at home:
*Visit the library frequently, choose books that are of high interest to your child, and are no more difficult to read than three to five errors per page.
*Have your child read to you or an older sibling orally 30 minutes or more each evening to improve fluency. Discuss the story at the end of the reading to check for comprehension.
*Keep a writing journal at home. Write about topics of interest or things going on in your life. Have another person keep a journal too, and trade them for reading.
*Read to your child. Children of all ages like to be read to. This could be a way to choose a current event or "hot topic" on the news, or just spend some quality time together.
*Practice spelling words at home. Check for accuracy.
*Check to see that homework was completed as assigned. Check the agenda too.
*Pick a story and find the verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs in the sentences.
*Play games that increase strategies and comprehension. Some good games include checkers, bingo, quizmo, scrabble, and dominoes. These increase math concepts and comprehension and are just plain fun! Use flash cards, or other visual aides to practice multiplication and division facts. Find practical math applications in your home and explain them. Things such as "half-off" an item from the original price, miles per gallon of gasoline, or which is a better buy: 30 cents each or four for a dollar, etc.
*READ, READ, READ!!!

Kid's Domain- Parents Please Read
It is very crucial that parents and educators are aware of the risks of surfing online for children. Safe surfing is something that needs to be discussed with children frequently. Information about safe surfing can be found at: http://www.kidsdomain.com/features/safesurf/surf.html Many students and their families are unaware of the risk of internet surfing, please take the time to go over this information and inform your children about safe surfing.
